The white sand mussel Donax serra Röding is an important and often dominant component of the sandy beach macrofauna around the southern African coastline from Namibia through to the Transkei, with very large populations on the West Coast and in the Algoa Bay region (de Villiers, 1973, 1974; McLachlan and Hanekom, 1979; Bally, 1981). It is commonest on exposed beaches and filter feeds on phytoplankton and detritus. In South Africa it is found occupying the mid- to high rocky shore (Branch et al. 2010; Mead et al. 2011).

Its breeding range extends from Lüderitz, Namibia to Mazeppa Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa. There are estimated to be over 6,000 adult birds in total. In the photo, the closed ones are live and the open one has been steamed. They had good flavor, much more delicate than New Zealand mussels.
